The City of Mission Viejo is holding a second community workshop to discuss the Oso Creek Golf Course and Public Space on Tuesday, July 27.
The City has drafted a plan based on public input from the first workshop in March.
"Since the public involvement was so robust during the first virtual workshop, the July meeting will also be held from 6-7:30 pm via Zoom," said a City spokesperson.
The objective of this second workshop is to "help identify alternatives for the best uses of the public space in the future," stated in a news release.
Mission Viejo acquired the former Casta Del Sol Golf Course in 2019, initially designed in 1970 by Ted Robinson. The 18-hole, 3,760-yard, par 61 course includes two creeks fed by underground springs and mountain runoff, offering fairways for the beginner to the advanced golfer. It's Terrace on the Green Restaurant offers cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and an evening Happy Hour menu.
Based on comments from the City website, residents have strong points of view about the future of the facility as well as the area surrounding.
"Don't shorten holes 1, 9 and 10. If you need to shorten one hole, OK but to turn all 3 into short par 3 has a huge impact," wrote Dave Stoenner. "My wife and I golf 2-3 times a week and would not if these three holes were shortened. I can't believe we are alone."
Other comments addressed possible improvements that would complement not only the course, but benefit both residents and visitors, including improved public restrooms and food resources and a hiking trail incorporated into the golf course.
"The proposed amenities (especially the additional accommodations like restrooms and food resources) to the community trail system not to mention the connectivity of the Civic Center, community center, Oso Creek Trail, and all the way up to the lake is a must needed and wanted improvement," wrote Colleen Edgren. She added the amenities would increase the number of people served to include the entire community versus a select few.
The City now owns more than 200 acres of public space within the city limits, including the open space along Oso Creek between Casta Del Sol Road and Jeronimo Road.
